At the Door

“Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”      -Revelations 3:20

My husband was home, and I had errands to run.  So, I grabbed the opportunity to go alone.  I considered taking Adi but decided she would have more fun playing with the girls than waiting in the truck for me.  The moment I picked up the keys, Adi glued herself to me with her “I know you’re leaving take me too” look.  I reassured her I’d be back soon as I shut the door. 

A couple hours later, I opened the door and an ecstatic lab bounded out, dancing around my grocery laden hands.  She offered no reprimand of “how could you leave me.”  Only the joy of being reunited.  When I asked my oldest daughter how the evening went, she looked at me and said, “Adi laid at the door waiting for you the entire time.”  As I unloaded the groceries, I thought about my daughter’s statement.  In that moment the Lord whispered a beautiful reminder, “That’s how I waited for you- patiently, ready to give you a joyous greeting the moment you opened the door of your heart to me again.” 

You see for a period of my life, I wasn’t opening the door of my life to Jesus.  I knew He was there, but in my youthful independence I chose to exert my self-reliance and go it alone.  They weren’t the best of years.  I made choices I regret and became someone I didn’t like- prideful, negative, and critical.  I clearly remember the day when I opened the door of my heart to Jesus once again.  No condemnation was spoken only a joyful reunion filled with love and mercy! 

Adi will have to lay at the door waiting for me many more times in the years to come.  But Jesus won’t.  I cannot fathom a day outside His presence.  I share this to encourage you.  If you haven’t opened the door of your life to Jesus in a while or ever, don’t wait another day.  Your loving Savior has been waiting patiently for you to return home.  Open the door.

    I LOVE this! I have happy tears in my eyes. Oh, how I relate. I wandered far from the Lord Jesus for many years, calling myself an agnostic-almost-atheist, and living my way, not His way… which led to all kinds of misery. When I finally reached the end of myself and opened the door to the Savior — OH! The JOY!!!!!

    1. Thank you for following but more importantly thank you for sharing a piece of your testimony. Your words brought to mind Revelations 12:11- “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

        Amen! That’s why I am writing a memoir.

        When I went to follow your blog after leaving my earlier comment, I found that I was already following you. However, I haven’t seen any of your posts in my WordPress reader. That seems to happen with some blogs, although it could be that I just somehow missed seeing your posts. Anyway, I unfollowed and then immediately followed you again, in case it was a glitch. I have found that seems to make a difference.
