On this day in 2016 a litter of Labrador Retriever puppies was born- one yellow male and three black females. One of those females (Adi) came to live with us, while another (Nova) went to live with my brother’s family, and the third (Maxine) stayed with our friend. Adi and Nova live close and play frequently. Maxine lives further away, and her life is shared with us through pictures. These pups are such a blessing to their families, bringing much love and laughter. To celebrate their birthday, I share a lesson learned from these beautiful Labrador sisters.
A Lesson from the Lab Sisters
My gaze couldn’t seem to move past the picture of Maxine displayed on the screen before me. Yes, I could see the sisterly resemblance but there was something else. The familiarity in the look on her face and the stance of her body held my attention. It was as if I had witnessed the scene that had led up to this still frame. A scene that might have played out like this . . .

Maxine had heard the call to come. She now stood patiently before our friend. Her eyes bright, her ears cocked, her tail swishing in eagerness. She knew from a lifetime of living in the presence of a beloved master to expect something good. Something just for her.
Maybe it’s the words of praise for her obedience
Maybe a ball is held with a call to retrieve.
Maybe the gift of a treat is tucked in a pocket.
Or, maybe it’s jingling keys with the invitation to hop in the truck and go on an adventure.
Whatever it is, she waits patiently, knowing in time that goodness would be released for her to enjoy.
My mind’s eye could paint this scene because I’ve seen this exact countenance in Adi and Nova countless times. In that moment, I realized that these Lab sisters had a lesson to teach me about responding to the Lord’s call.

They were showing me that when I hear Jesus, the good Shepherd’s voice, I need to willingly come, like these Labs, to stand at His feet (John 10: 14, 27). The same eager anticipation coursing through my heart and mind. Anticipation created by my knowledge that the Lord who called me is “abundant in goodness” (Psalm 145: 7 & Exodus 34:6). As I patiently wait before Him, I can trust He will pour that goodness into my life in His time.
“And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.” -Romans 8:28, Amplified
“I know that I will live to see the Lord’s goodness in this present life. Trust in the Lord. Have faith, do not despair. Trust in the Lord.” -Psalm 27:13

I remember that same stance of trusting waiting and expectation in our own pup, Kenzie. Now in “puppy heaven”.
Thanks for sharing!
Happy 3rd birthday to the three sisters!

I really like the song that goes with the massage.
Maxine looks a little more like Nova, but they all have the same look of anticipation.
Good word!

I’m glad you liked the song. Mom gets the credit. She heard it Sunday, and it immediately reminded her of this lesson.
I agree Nova and Maxine look much more alike! Who knows, maybe Adi looks more like her brother.
